Legislative Memo: Intersex Education and Outreach

A.7527-A (Seawright)/S.8278 (Hoylman) would permit the Department of Health, in conjunction with directly impacted individuals and their chosen advocates and medical providers, to conduct a public education campaign around the existence of intersex people and the risks associated with nonemergent interventions performed on intersex infants and children. This important legislation responds to an issue at the intersection of bodily autonomy – the ability to make decisions for oneself about one’s own body – and combatting gender stereotypes. The NYCLU supports this bill.
