NYCLU on Governor Hochul Signing Abortion Shield Legislation

NEW YORKToday, Governor Hochul signed S.1066B/A.1709B (Mayer/Reyes), legislation which protects providers, patients, and those who help others access care against attacks from hostile states for the provision of, receipt of, or assistance in accessing reproductive health care services, including abortion care.

In response, New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman issued the following statement:

“New York must lead the fight against an anti-abortion, extremist agenda that is hell bent on stopping abortions in every corner of the country. The Mayer/Reyes bill sends a powerful message that New York will not be complicit in other states’ cruel attempts to punish people for providing, receiving, and helping others get the abortion care they need.

“As forced-pregnancy states attempt to criminalize women across the country, New York must find every legal pathway possible to protect those who provide, seek, and support care. On the eve of the Dobbs anniversary, when 25 million women now live in forced-pregnancy states, we applaud Governor Hochul for swiftly signing this legislation into law to ensure that New York remains a safe place to provide, assist in, and obtain abortion care.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
