Legislative and Advocacy Program Assistant

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's leading advocates on behalf of constitutional rights and liberties. Founded in 1951, as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with 48,000 members statewide.

The NYCLU has a job opening for a program assistant who will work with the legislative ana advocacy departments. The program assistant reports to the legislative and advocacy directors and interacts closely with staff in both departments.

The program assistant will undertake a range of tasks and responsibilities that facilitate and coordinate legislative, organizing and public education activities. In this role the program assistant will:

  • Manage and maintain an e-activism database, which involves entering data and generating reports;
  • Draft, proofread and edit correspondence, reports and other documents;
  • Manage coalition lists and schedule meetings with advocates;
  • Distribute documents – legislative memos, sign-on letters, public-education materials – on pending legislation and legislative proposals;
  • Prepare lobby reports, which involves compiling information and filing (electronically) timely submissions on a recurring basis;
  • Organize and maintain electronic and hard-copy subject matter files;
  • Coordinate mailings for various projects, including the NYCLU’s Student Expression Contest; and
  • Provide administrative support to program staff.

We seek in a candidate for this position an individual who possesses a commitment to civil liberties and civil rights and who has strong organizational and interpersonal skills, excellent writing skills and a keen eye for administrative detail. Computer proficiency (specifically in MS Excel) is essential. The position requires an individual who is self-motivated and who will take initiative to see projects through to successful completion.

The position is available immediately. Salary is based on experience and qualifications. The NYCLU offers excellent health and dental benefits.
